2020

Working with precious metals and stones

During the 2020 lockdown, I was able to spend some time learning from luxury jewellery designer John Watling, and made two rings from unformed silver and cut stones. I learnt about metallic prototyping and used high-tech machinery such as a laser welder to achieve a highly detailed finish.

Project Outcomes:

  • Preparatory sketches

  • Metalworking skills

  • Two complete ring designs

Sketching & Prototyping

Planning initial designs through sketch and experimenting with shape using uncooked pasta, which makes for a great substitute for malleable metals.

Metalworking

Manual shaping, soldering & laser welding was used to create ring shapes from the base materials: silver wire, stone sets and cut stones
