Eras
2024
Combining technology and fashion
Can one dress include 13 different colours? What if it could change colour? What if one of those colours must be black? This was the starting point for this piece, designed for attendance at Taylor Swift’s Eras tour. It is completely wearable with the LEDs and power source held within the dress itself.
Project Outcomes:
Wearable garment for concert and prior security checks
Costing spreadsheet
Short form media content
Garment Construction
The bodice was loosely based on a pattern found, and the skirt on the design of a ballet tutu. Both parts required multiple layers of fabric, overlocked edges and seems, and were fully lined for comfort.
Dying Net
To achieve an ombre effect on the skirt, the net needed to be carefully dyed using spray-on fabric dye.
Testing & Embedding LEDs
Before constructing the dress, LEDs were tested under various layers of fabric to optimise the light and colour dispersion. The phone-controlled LED strip was then hand-sewn into the skirt and a pocket was made the house the power bank.
